How to choose a wellness provider who fits your goals

'Wellness' covers everything from certified yoga therapy to someone who watched a weekend seminar. The field has almost no gatekeeping, which means finding a great provider is on you. Here's a framework that works across modalities — yoga, breathwork, reiki, meditation, or holistic coaching.

Name the outcome, not the modality

'I want to sleep better' is a goal. 'I want to try reiki' is a method. Start with the goal and let the provider suggest the method — a good wellness pro will tell you when you're a fit and when you'd be better served by someone else (a doctor, a therapist, a physical therapist).

Red flag: anyone who claims to treat everything. Real pros have specialties.

Credentials that actually mean something

Yoga: 200-hour (RYT-200) is entry-level; 500-hour (RYT-500) or C-IAYT (yoga therapy) indicates deeper training.

Breathwork: look for training lineages (Wim Hof, Holotropic, Pranayama) rather than generic 'breathwork coach.'

Reiki / Energy work: Levels I, II, Master; a certifying lineage; years of practice.

Coaching: ICF credentials (ACC, PCC, MCC) are the clearest signal. 'Life coach' with no credential is a flag to ask more.

Questions to ask before your first session

Who do you typically work with? (Specificity is good.)

What does a typical first session look like?

How will I know it's working for me?

What's your cancellation policy?

What happens if I realize partway through this isn't a fit?

The answers matter less than whether the provider has answers at all.

What a good session feels like

You should feel seen, not sold. A first session is partly diagnostic — they're learning your body, history, and goals. If the whole session is a pitch for a 12-week package, that's the pitch, not the work.

Results in wellness are usually cumulative — three to five sessions is a fair trial window before you decide if a provider is right for you.

FAQ

Is wellness covered by insurance?

Usually no, except for yoga therapy or some mindfulness programs via HSA/FSA. Always check with your specific plan.

How much does a wellness session cost?

Group classes $20–$40. Private sessions $90–$200 depending on modality and experience. Packages of 5–10 sessions typically discount 10–20%.
